Writer’s Log: A Tale of Two Book Covers

Who knew fonts would be so difficult.

When I finished the second draft of the book, I headed out to find a book cover.

Having heard all the arguments against using AI or Canva to create a book cover myself, and not trusting my own graphic skills, I did what a lot of people do and went to Fiverr. I chose a reasonably rated artist, paid what I thought was a reasonable sum for the service, and…I just wasn’t happy with the outcome. There was limited edits so while things did change, it wasn’t enough.

I went to various places and asked for recommendation. I received very few. One of the few I did receive had a collective website which looked great but was entirely the wrong genre.

I felt disheartened.

Work and health then intervened and it was a long while before I came back to the idea of sourcing a book cover. I researched. I looked at many different independent book cover artists. I read their reviews and looked at their work. It took me over a week to make a sourcing decision.

But I’m really pleased with my decision. It has been a great experience, and a learning experience. It is not enough to think about the book’s brief, but also to consider the genres, the trends of covers in the market, and to ensure an easy template for a series. It is not easy when the book straddles genre.

The Cursed Conman is a contemporary murder-mystery with a fantasy twist; think Agatha Christie meets Arthurian magic.

Fonts became the bane of my existence. In the end, these two variants are the ones which spoke the loudest to me.

Option A:

A man looks at a manor house in the distance

Option B:

A man and dog look at a manor house

I thought I might post them both here to see what my readers and those who follow my writer’s log think and whether that matches the views of my friends and family who have already commented. Please comment below with your thoughts! Which do you think would attract people best – option A or B?

I’m working on my marketing plan and really thinking about the launch date for the book so hopefully will have this also pinned down soon – it’s already had to change due to my health issues at the moment unfortunately.

For those waiting on news of my fanfiction and the posting of Another Dimension, later this month is still the plan and there will be a longer update in next week’s Writer’s Log where I’ll also have the final choice on the book cover.

Needless to say having the book cover makes it all the more real. So exciting!
